Info about Nature Center Bison

FWNC&R Bison Facts
The bison herd is owned by the Friends of the Nature Center.
The herd started with a donation of 3 bison from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in 1973.
The Refuge's first bison calf, a heifer, was born on May 21, 1974.
Over 68% of Refuge calves are born in April and May.
The Refuge bison herd undergoes genetic testing and does not exhibit any cattle genes.
The Herd Sire was acquired from the Vermejo Park Ranch in New Mexico in 2004 to introduce new genetics to the line.
The bison range consists of 5 pastures totaling 210 acres.
In 2007, 17 bison were donated to the Refuge herd.
To begin 2010, the herd consists of 24 bison: 3 adult bulls, 4 young bulls, 11 cows, & 6 heifers.
We expect up to 11 calves to be born in 2010!
