| The bison herd is owned by the Friends of the Nature Center. |
| The herd started with a donation of 3 bison from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in 1973. |
| The Refuge's first bison calf, a heifer, was born on May 21, 1974. |
| Over 68% of Refuge calves are born in April and May. |
| The Refuge bison herd undergoes genetic testing and does not exhibit any cattle genes. |
| The Herd Sire was acquired from the Vermejo Park Ranch in New Mexico in 2004 to introduce new genetics to the line. |
| The bison range consists of 5 pastures totaling 210 acres. |
| In 2007, 17 bison were donated to the Refuge herd. |
| To begin 2010, the herd consists of 24 bison: 3 adult bulls, 4 young bulls, 11 cows, & 6 heifers. |
| We expect up to 11 calves to be born in 2010! |
